Boxers were once a staple in men’s underwear, but it’s time to move on.
If you’re a boxers guy, you might think we’re being elitists, but hear us out. With current fashion trends and personal comfort taken into consideration, a loose-fitting pair of boxers just isn’t going to cut it.
Look Good, Feel Great
When it comes to style, the two most important elements are to look good and to feel comfortable. Since this is personal, looking good and feeling comfortable may take different forms for different guys. But across the board, fashion trends are getting more tailored and fitted. No longer is it the norm for suits to be oversized or pants to be baggy. One implication of this: boxers have got to go.
If boxers are worn under a well-tailored suit, jeans, or work attire, the loose fabric is going to get bunched up around the thighs or ride up the waist. Guys who wear boxers favor their looseness and comfort, but there is nothing comfortable about fabric getting twisted around your upper thighs. Not only is this incredibly annoying, but it can also make for a very unflattering silhouette. When boxer shorts get bunched up under your pants, it makes for visible folds and lumps of fabric in your outfit. The sleek silhouette your outfit was designed to have is immediately undermined.
For many guys, comfort is the primary concern. That’s totally fine. You should always feel comfortable and confident in your underwear. But, if you know how to dress according to your body type and how to measure yourself correctly, other styles of underwear are going to give you ample comfort.
Dress Your Age
Boxer shorts are also one of the rare pieces of clothing that can look either incredibly juvenile or overtly elderly. If they’re a solid color and traditional looking, wearing them will make you appear older. As there is nothing exciting or sleek about this style, you run the risk of coming across as boring, too. Alternatively, vibrant boxers with a graphic print design can have the opposite effect. Since these are a popular choice among teenagers, such boxers can make you appear immature or juvenile.
If you can vote or rent a car, you’re too old to be wearing graphic boxers; if you care about professionalism and sex appeal, you’re too young to wear Grandpa's boxers. Connotations about personality aside, they also fail to create a striking silhouette. Unlike other styles of underwear that can accentuate your best features, the style and loose fit of boxers is going to flatten and conceal, rather than emphasize.
